Everything Is Meaningless—Until You Decide Otherwise

October 02, 20252 min read

At first glance, the phrase “everything is meaningless” might sound heavy, even discouraging. But here’s the truth: everything is meaningless… until we assign it meaning.

The way we interpret events, challenges, or opportunities determines how we experience life. The problem is, if we’re not intentional, our brains tend to fill in the blanks with negativity. That’s where the work begins.

Thermometer vs. Thermostat

One of my favorite analogies for this comes from the difference between a thermometer and a thermostat.

  • A thermometer is reactive. It reflects its environment. If the room is hot, the thermometer shows hot. If it’s cold, it shows cold. It doesn’t set the tone—it simply responds.

  • A thermostat, on the other hand, is proactive. It sets the temperature. It creates the environment it wants.

Most of us, when we’re burned out or disconnected, live like thermometers. We let circumstances or other people’s opinions dictate our experience. But when we choose to live like thermostats, we set the standard, the goals, and the actions that align with what we want to create.

Main Character Energy

Another visual I love is to imagine your life as a live show, with you as the main character. If you were watching yourself from the audience, what would you cheer yourself on to do? What brave step would you encourage yourself to take?

This exercise helps you shift out of waiting for external validation, and back into the truth: you are the writer, director, and star of your own life.

How to Rewrite Your Story

Reclaiming your path requires an intentional framework. That’s where ALIGN comes in:

  • Awareness: Recognizing where you’ve been living reactively.

  • Liberation: Releasing old patterns of people-pleasing and fear.

  • Introspection: Clarifying what you actually want.

  • Guided Action: Taking aligned steps toward that vision.

  • New Identity: Embodying the person who no longer settles for “meaningless.”

When you begin to see your life as something you create—not just something you endure—you stop waiting for permission and start living in alignment.

Final Thoughts

Everything in your life is waiting for you to give it meaning. The question is: will you let others assign it for you, or will you step into the role of thermostat and main character?
