Your Private Practice Growth Depends on the Voice You Listen To
The conversation happening inside your mind may be the biggest factor influencing your business.
Have you ever felt like two opposing voices were competing for your attention?
One tells you to take the leap.
The other tells you to wait.
One encourages you to dream bigger.
The other reminds you of everything that could go wrong.
One says,
"You're ready."
The other whispers,
"Who do you think you are?"
If you've ever experienced that internal tug-of-war, you're not alone.
Every entrepreneur has an inner dialogue.
The question isn't whether those voices exist.
The question is:
Which one are you choosing to listen to?
Because the voice that consistently receives your attention eventually shapes your identity, your decisions, and ultimately your private practice growth.
Why Your Brain Creates Conflicting Voices
Your brain has one primary responsibility:
To keep you alive.
Not successful.
Not fulfilled.
Safe.
That distinction matters.
When you're navigating uncertainty, launching something new, raising your prices, hiring your first employee, speaking on stage, or stepping into greater visibility, your brain naturally evaluates whether that experience feels safe.
If it doesn't...
It often creates resistance.
That resistance isn't a sign you're on the wrong path.
It's often a sign you're leaving familiar territory.
Understanding this completely changed the way I viewed fear, burnout, and business growth.
Your Brain Is Filtering Reality Every Second
One of the most fascinating systems in your brain is the Reticular Activating System (RAS).
Think of it as your brain's personal filter.
Every second, your brain receives millions of pieces of information.
It simply can't process all of them.
So your RAS decides what deserves your attention.
And it makes those decisions based on what you've repeatedly taught it is important.
Your beliefs.
Your stories.
Your past experiences.
Your expectations.
This filtering process happens in several ways.
Distortion
Your brain amplifies information that supports your current beliefs.
If you believe entrepreneurship is overwhelming...
You'll notice more evidence that confirms it.
If you believe you're becoming an effective leader...
Your brain begins noticing evidence of growth instead.
Deletion
Your brain removes information that doesn't seem relevant.
You may overlook opportunities simply because they don't fit the identity you've been reinforcing.
Generalization
Your brain creates shortcuts.
One difficult client becomes:
"Clients are difficult."
One unsuccessful launch becomes:
"Nothing ever works."
One mistake becomes:
"I'm not cut out for this."
These generalizations simplify information.
But they don't necessarily represent reality.
The Two Voices We All Carry
I like to think of our inner dialogue as two internal archetypes.
Not because there are literally two people inside our minds.
But because it helps us recognize the different perspectives competing for our attention.
The Ego
Your ego isn't evil.
It's protective.
Its job is survival.
It values certainty.
Predictability.
Comfort.
Familiarity.
It asks questions like:
"What if this fails?"
"What if people judge you?"
"What if you're not ready?"
Its intentions are good.
It wants to keep you safe.
The challenge is that safety and familiarity are not always the same as growth.
Your Expansive CEO Self
Then there's another voice.
It's usually quieter.
Calmer.
More patient.
It doesn't operate from urgency.
It operates from possibility.
It asks:
"What could happen if this works?"
"What would the future version of me choose?"
"What would I love?"
This voice doesn't ignore fear.
It simply refuses to let fear make the decisions.
The Voice That Grows Is the One You Feed
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is this:
Attention is energy.
Whatever receives your attention becomes stronger.
If you spend every day replaying worst-case scenarios...
Your fear grows.
If you consistently reinforce possibility...
Your confidence grows.
The voices themselves aren't the problem.
The problem is unintentionally allowing the loudest voice to become the leader.
Leadership begins when you consciously decide which voice deserves the microphone.
Why Intrapersonal Communication Matters
Most people think communication is something that happens between people.
But one of the most important conversations you'll ever have is the one you have with yourself.
This is called intrapersonal communication.
It's your internal dialogue.
Your self-talk.
Your ability to process emotions.
Reflect on experiences.
Challenge limiting beliefs.
Direct your attention intentionally.
Strong self-leaders don't eliminate negative thoughts.
They learn to respond to them differently.
Your Body Needs to Feel Safe Before It Expands
When we're burned out, we often become disconnected from our bodies.
We live almost entirely inside our thoughts.
But growth doesn't happen through thinking alone.
It happens when your nervous system begins recognizing expansion as safe.
That might mean feeling safe with:
Greater visibility.
Higher revenue.
Receiving support.
Delegating.
Setting boundaries.
Slowing down.
Success itself.
Many entrepreneurs unknowingly sabotage the very things they desire because their nervous system still associates those experiences with uncertainty.
Before your business expands...
Your capacity has to expand too.
Follow the Voice That's Aligned
Here's something I've stopped doing.
I no longer try to silence my ego.
Because that's not its purpose.
Its purpose is survival.
Instead...
I simply stop allowing it to make my decisions.
I acknowledge it.
Thank it.
Then intentionally choose to follow the voice that's aligned with who I'm becoming.
Every decision becomes easier when viewed through one simple question:
Which voice is speaking right now?
Then ask yourself:
Which voice deserves my attention?
Self-Leadership Is Choosing Your Focus
One of my favorite reminders is:
Where focus goes, energy flows.
Your focus determines what your brain notices.
What your brain notices reinforces your beliefs.
Your beliefs influence your identity.
Your identity drives your actions.
Your actions create your results.
Everything begins with attention.
That's why awareness is always the first step.
Not because awareness changes your life overnight.
But because awareness allows you to choose differently.
And every aligned decision strengthens the leader you're becoming.
Your Next Step
If you feel stuck but can’t quite identify why…
There’s likely something beneath the surface.
