Private Practice Burnout: When It Looks Like ADHD (But Isn’t)
When Something Feels “Off”
Have you ever felt like your brain just… stopped working?
You can’t focus.
You start things but don’t finish them.
You feel overwhelmed from the moment you wake up.
Even simple tasks feel exhausting.
At some point, you might start asking yourself:
“Do I have ADHD?”
That’s exactly where I found myself during my private practice journey.
And what I discovered changed everything.
My Experience: When Burnout Felt Like ADHD
There was a season in my business where I felt like I couldn’t function.
I was:
Constantly overwhelmed
Unable to focus for more than a few minutes
Starting multiple projects and finishing none
Exhausted — no matter how much I rested
I truly believed something was wrong with me.
So I did what many people would do…
I sought professional help.
The Unexpected Outcome
After going through a full evaluation process, I was expecting clarity.
A diagnosis.
An explanation.
A solution.
But instead…
I was told I did not have ADHD.
I was shocked.
Because everything I was experiencing felt real.
But the reason behind the result?
Those symptoms were not present earlier in my life.
That’s when I learned something I wish I had known sooner:
A dysregulated nervous system from prolonged burnout can mimic neurodivergence
How Burnout Can Mimic ADHD Symptoms
Burnout doesn’t just feel like exhaustion.
It can impact your brain, your focus, and your behavior in ways that closely resemble ADHD.
Here’s how it often shows up:
1. Executive Dysfunction
You may find yourself:
Struggling to start tasks
Forgetting things
Feeling disorganized
Unable to follow through
This isn’t because you’re incapable.
It’s because your mental bandwidth is depleted.
2. Emotional Dysregulation
Burnout can make you feel:
Irritable
Anxious
Overwhelmed
Reactive
When your nervous system is constantly activated, it becomes harder to regulate your emotions.
3. Sensory Overload
You may become more sensitive to:
Noise
Light
Stimuli
Things that never used to bother you suddenly feel overwhelming.
4. Loss of Interest and Motivation
Activities you once enjoyed may feel:
Uninteresting
Draining
Pointless
This can lead to major decisions — like wanting to quit your job or pivot completely — without fully understanding why.
5. Chronic Fatigue
Even when you rest…
You still feel tired.
Because this isn’t just physical exhaustion.
It’s nervous system exhaustion.
6. Masking and Mental Exhaustion
You may try to:
Push through
Force focus
“Act normal”
But this takes a massive amount of energy.
Eventually, it becomes unsustainable.
Why This Happens
When you’ve been in a prolonged state of stress…
Your body shifts into survival mode.
Your nervous system becomes dysregulated.
You’re constantly:
On alert
Overstimulated
Mentally overloaded
And over time…
Your system begins to break down.
The Deeper Root Cause: It’s Not Just Burnout
For me, burnout wasn’t the only issue.
It was also:
My patterns
My beliefs
My constant overcommitment
My identity tied to productivity
I was stuck in a loop:
Do more
Feel overwhelmed
Fall behind
Push harder
Repeat.
The Shift: From Survival Mode to Alignment
What changed everything wasn’t just rest.
It was awareness.
I had to:
Identify the patterns
Interrupt them
Replace them
That looked like:
Adjusting my calendar to match my energy
Creating new standards for how I operated
Shifting my self-talk and expectations
Letting go of constant overcommitment
That’s when I started to feel like myself again.
You Are Not Broken
If this resonates with you, I want you to hear this clearly:
You are not broken.
You are not failing.
And you are not alone.
Sometimes what you’re experiencing isn’t what it seems.
Sometimes…
It’s burnout.
What to Do Next
If you’re unsure what’s actually causing your overwhelm…
Start with awareness.

Final Thought
You don’t need to label yourself to understand what’s happening.
You need to understand your patterns.
Because when you do…
You can change them.
